Designing Sensory-Inclusive Automotive Spaces

In an age where automotive design increasingly focuses on technology and connectivity, how can car interiors better support the wellbeing of all occupants – particularly those who are neurodivergent?

With an estimated one in seven people being neurodivergent, the automotive industry faces both a challenge and an opportunity.

Having supplied the world’s leading car makers for 120 years, we’re constantly exploring innovative ways to support customers through our research-based in-house collections. These collections serve as both a source of inspiration and a platform to showcase innovative finishing techniques.

With our Conscious Collection, we’re exploring the role of multisensory design in reducing driver stress and enhancing comfort. To gain insights, we engaged with neurodivergent individuals, listening to their experiences to inform material choices and design approaches.

Following this extensive programme, our design team is proud to reveal a range of transformative, sensory-inclusive interior concepts. This thoughtful series has been designed to deliver a calmer, more comfortable experience – which is especially impactful for neurodivergent occupants.

One of the key takeaways from our research has been the importance of simplicity.

The thoughtful use of colour, texture, and pattern can guide the eye, create structure, and enhance comfort – without adding unnecessary visual or tactile ‘noise’. Similarly, soft, muted tones can provide sensory comfort without overwhelming the senses, creating a tranquil and rejuvenating travelling experience.

The role of scent should also not be overlooked. While highly personal, for many, the aroma of a natural material such as leather evokes a sense of nostalgia, comfort, and security. It can create a subconscious link to familiar, reassuring memories – whether the interior of a cherished vehicle, the feeling of home, or a sense of belonging.

Debra Choong, Design Manager at Bridge of Weir Leather, states:

"With the Conscious Collection, our aim is to minimise potential stressors and ensure our natural materials contribute to a calming environment. Ultimately, we want to create interiors that foster inclusivity while celebrating the unique strengths of neurodivergent individuals – enhancing the travel experience for all.

At its core, this collection is about rethinking the relationship between materials and human experience – ensuring that car interiors are not just visually appealing but also intuitive, inclusive, and emotionally supportive. Car design is moving toward more personalised, human-centric spaces. By embracing neurodiversity and multisensory design principles, car manufacturers can create vehicles that don’t just transport people but actively contribute to their wellbeing.”
